School Lockdown Systems
What do you know so far about dynamic lockdown procedures?
Dynamic lockdown is the ability to quickly restrict access and egress to a site or building (or part of) through physical measures in response to a threat, either external or internal. The aim of lockdown is to prevent people moving into danger areas and preventing or frustrating the attackers accessing a site (or part of). It is recognised that due to their nature some sites may not be able to achieve lockdown.

Information About Lockdown Systems & NaCTSO Policy
A lockdown system can be a number of security systems integrated in with one another which then essentially becomes a bespoke system. A typical example of this would be a single activation switch to secure a number of doors in a part of the school while also triggering an audible tone/message into the affected area. This can also then be expanded into other zones of the school if necessary.
A guidance for schools establishing lockdown procedures:
- Close all windows and doors
- Lock up
- Out of sight and minimise movement
- Stay silent and avoid drawing attention
- Endure – be aware you may be in lockdown for some time
Bodet systems are a zoned PA system enabling different messages to be broadcast into different zones of the school. With options of multiple chimes to differentiate between existing school emergency systems and class change tones, appropriate action can then be taken to ensure that school staff and pupils are kept safe at all times.
The system can be used for
- Wet breaks
- Panic alarm
- Other prerecorded announcements
IP intercom systems can combine a mixture of LCD screens, call buttons, keypads, RFID card readers, cameras and relays all in one device and can also send snapshots of visitors to email so that you always know who is trying to access the premises.

A lockdown system could be as simple as a single switch activating the existing fire alarm sounders or PA system. This is programmed to use a different tones and sounds so staff and pupils can easily differentiate between a fire alarm activation and a lockdown alert.
A number of these lockdown switches can be positioned around the premises.
A pre-existing VoIP system can be used and integrated into a lockdown system. This can be used in the event of an emergency to send immediate emergency notifications from any keyboard, phone or panic button. It also automatically monitors, records and sends alerts whenever any emergency number is dialed.
